Speyburn to open to public for tours

Speyside distillery Speyburn will permanently open to the public for the first time in its 126-year history.

From 1 August 2023, Speyburn Distillery in Rothes will welcome guests to its new visitor experience, offering a behind-the-scenes experience of the distilling process.

A trio of daily tours will be offered at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm from Tuesdays to Saturdays, and booking is now open on the Speyburn website.

Each tour will last for an hour and 45 minutes, with a maximum of 10 guests per tour. Adults can join the tour for £20 (US$26) per person, while children aged 12-17 can be booked for £10 (US$13) each.

The move follows the inaugural public viewing during this year’s Spirit of Speyside festival, which the distillery hailed a success.

Euan Henderson, Speyburn distillery manager, said: “There is something very special about the setting and atmosphere at Speyburn, perhaps because it’s quite a hidden distillery and one that has gone about the business of making award-winning drams that are loved the world over in a very quiet and modest way. But now it’s time to let the world in and we couldn’t be more excited.

“There’s no artifice about the visitor experience we have created. This will be a true taste of Speyside distillery life that will offer an accessible and enjoyable experience for all.

“This is about the people who make our whiskies welcoming guests into our home to share a taste of Speyburn single malts and the stories and secrets of how they are made.

“There’s 126 years of previously unseen distilling history here just waiting to be discovered in the heart of Speyside – so make sure you don’t miss tour slot on one of our tours this summer.”

Speyburn was founded by John Hopkins in 1897. Many of the original buildings, features and stonework still exist and will be available to visitors to discover.

Tours will include the distillery’s old drum maltings, and give insight into the site’s sustainable endeavours.

The global whisky category is forecast to increase in value by US$88.85 billion by 2028, new research has revealed.
