What is Tonic Water?

Tonic water is a carbonated soft drink that contains quinine, a compound derived from the bark of the cinchona tree. Quinine gives tonic its distinctive bitter flavor, which was historically used to ward off malaria. Modern tonic water is often sweetened to balance the bitterness, and it comes in a variety of styles, including classic, light, flavored, and artisanal options.

Variations and Different Styles of Tonic Water:

  1. Classic Tonic Water: Balanced bitterness and sweetness, ideal for a traditional Vodka Tonic.
  2. Light or Low-Calorie Tonic: Less sugar, offering a more pronounced bitterness, which pairs well with premium, smooth vodka.
  3. Flavored Tonics: Include botanicals such as elderflower, citrus, or herbs. These can add depth and complexity to the cocktail, complementing the vodka’s neutral profile.
  4. Artisan Tonics: Made with natural ingredients and often less sweet. These are ideal for craft vodka cocktails, emphasizing the purity and flavor of the vodka.

Fruits That Complement a Vodka Tonic:

  1. Lime: The most traditional garnish. Lime’s bright acidity cuts through the tonic’s bitterness and enhances the vodka’s crispness.
  2. Lemon: Provides a softer citrus note compared to lime, adding a hint of freshness without overpowering the drink.
  3. Cucumber: A refreshing, cooling element that pairs well with the bitterness of the tonic and the vodka’s smoothness.
  4. Grapefruit: Adds a bitter-sweet note, which complements the quinine in the tonic and gives a complex, layered flavor.
  5. Berries (such as raspberries or blackberries): These add a touch of sweetness and visual appeal, making the drink more enticing.
  6. Herbs (such as mint or basil): Fresh herbs can elevate the cocktail with aromatic elements, pairing well with flavored tonics.

Why These Fruits Work Well:

  • Citrus fruits like lime and lemon: They provide brightness and acidity, which balance the bitterness of the tonic.
  • Cucumber: Offers a subtle, cooling effect, perfect for a refreshing summer cocktail.
  • Grapefruit: Matches the tonic’s bitterness, while its juicy sweetness contrasts with the vodka.
  • Berries: Introduce a natural sweetness and a burst of flavor, appealing to those who prefer a fruitier profile.
  • Herbs: Add aromatic complexity, making the drink more sophisticated.

This Vodka Tonic recipe can be customized with various tonic waters and garnishes to suit your taste preferences, allowing endless experimentation and enjoyment.

Felene Legends, Lies & Libations – Vodka Tonic

Singapore skyline
Singapore skyline at night

In the neon-lit streets of 1990s Singapore, I found myself in a night crackling with energy. The air was thick with humidity, infused with mouthwatering aromas of sizzling street food. Motorcycles buzzed past, weaving through traffic like swift, determined shadows. Anything seemed possible that evening, and everything probably was.

My friends and I had gathered at a hidden bar in Boat Quay, one only locals knew. To enter, you had to knock three times and whisper, “Tiger Lily sends her regards.” The door would then open, revealing a room that pulsed with ’90s music. Nirvana blended with the Spice Girls, and somehow, it just worked. Ceiling fans spun lazily, and the amber lighting made everyone look slightly otherworldly.
We took over a wobbly wooden table, laughter flowing like the Singapore River outside. The bartender, wearing a Hawaiian shirt and sporting a ponytail, appeared with a grin. “What’ll it be?” he asked. I thought for a moment, then decided, “A Vodka Tonic.”

The first sip was pure magic, slicing through the heavy heat. The drink was simple, crisp, and refreshing. Meanwhile, everyone else chose a mix of Singapore Slings and cold Tiger Beers. We raised our glasses, toasting to life, friendship, and the joy of being young.
Just then, Colin, the one who always had wild ideas, leaned in. “There’s a karaoke bar nearby,” he said, eyes glinting. “But you have to pay with a story.” We all looked at him, intrigued. “What kind of story?” I asked. Colin leaned back, grinning. “The wilder, the better,” he said.
And so, we ventured out, stumbling through narrow alleys strung with lanterns. The streets were alive, buzzing with people, and the adventure had only just begun. Finally, we found the karaoke bar, a tiny hole-in-the-wall flashing with neon lights. A massive bouncer stood in front, looking bored.

“What’s your story?” he demanded, arms crossed over his chest. I took a breath and dove in. Quickly, I recounted a wild tale about accidentally joining an underground poker game. I explained how I’d somehow won with a pair of twos and barely escaped from furious gamblers. I was buzzed and I did not tell the story too well as I stuttered a bit and forgot the punch-line. The bouncer listened, and his eyes narrowed. Finally, he burst out laughing. “Good enough,” he said, stepping aside.

Inside, the chaos was perfect ’90s madness. Smoke machines hissed, neon lights flashed, and someone massacred “My Heart Will Go On.” We grabbed a booth, and soon enough, we were taking turns at the mic. We screamed through “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and danced to “Wannabe,” our voices hoarse and hearts full.
Eventually, I ended up on a balcony, looking out over the dazzling city. The skyscrapers gleamed like stars, and the Singapore River shimmered in the moonlight. My friends gathered beside me, all leaning on the railing, glasses nearly empty. Someone sighed and said, “What a night.” I couldn’t help but agree.

We clinked glasses. “To nights we’ll never forget,” I said. The city seemed to toast with us, its lights winking in approval. And so, the night rolled on, with more laughter, more drinks, and the promise of stories that would grow taller with time. The best kind of night—the kind only the ’90s could deliver..
