In the heart of Seattle, Downtown Spirits has emerged as a case study in innovation. Unlike most liquor retailers, where manual ID checks and staffed registers dominate, Downtown Spirits, Seattle is redefining how alcohol is sold. At the center of this transformation stands owner Marques Warren, a tech-savvy entrepreneur committed to frictionless customer experiences and business modernization.
Checkout-Free in a Controlled Industry
While self-checkout has become standard in many industries, liquor remains heavily regulated. Automated alcohol sales are rare. Yet, Downtown Spirits, Seattle has shattered expectations. In 2021, Warren seized the opportunity to collaborate with Amazon, headquartered just blocks away. The project? A checkout-free liquor store, powered by Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology.
The timing was challenging but fortuitous. As Downtown Spirits approached its 10th anniversary, Warren learned his building would be demolished. Forced to relocate, he scouted potential sites during the height of the Omicron Covid-19 wave—while recovering from the virus himself.
It was during this period that Amazon’s Just Walk Out platform became available for licensing. Warren, already experienced with data-driven retail, initiated discussions. Within weeks, plans to integrate the technology aligned with selecting a new location.

A High-Tech Home for Downtown Spirits, Seattle
The new Downtown Spirits location at 1813 7th Avenue reopened in summer 2023. Just a short walk from Amazon’s campus, the 3,900-square-foot store blends Prohibition-era design with next-generation retail systems.
Customers scan a QR code via the Downtown Spirits app at the entry gate. This syncs with their Amazon wallet and performs real-time verification and fraud checks. A greeter at the front door still performs manual ID checks, but otherwise, the experience is seamless.
Cameras and sensors track each item picked up. When customers exit, their transaction is automatically processed—no lines, no register. Every visit also integrates with the store’s loyalty program.
“The flexibility of Amazon’s system let us build a store that fits our brand,” says Warren. “The digital and physical support from Amazon made integration painless.”
Benefits of Checkout-Free Retail
The advantages go far beyond novelty. Shrinkage decreases. Staff are free to focus on customer service, not ringing up purchases.
“In Seattle, our customers are well-informed,” Warren notes. “They expect knowledgeable staff. This model lets us deliver that.”
For those preferring traditional checkout, a section of the store remains dedicated to cashier service. Roughly 100 core SKUs are maintained there.
City Hive, a long-standing tech partner, helped connect the system with mobile ordering and ERP functions. “We moved to a cloud-based ERP. Now, we have better data-sharing and operational efficiency,” Warren explains.
Expansion Through Acquisition
While launching the tech-forward Downtown Spirits, Seattle, Warren was approached with another opportunity. Chuck LeFevre, owner of Esquin Wine & Spirits, offered to sell his business. Founded in 1969, Esquin is the oldest independent wine shop in Washington.
Though busy, Warren was intrigued. In January 2023, he completed the acquisition. Esquin’s 15,000-square-foot location includes a wine storage business and over 6,500 SKUs in wine and spirits.
Rather than rebrand it, Warren honored Esquin’s legacy by preserving its identity and even integrating an Esquin-branded wine section inside Downtown Spirits.
“The institutional knowledge of Esquin is invaluable,” Warren says. “It fits our vision for offering premium experiences and local connections.”
Tech Upgrades at Esquin and MadWine.com
The purchase also included MadWine.com, an online retailer with a strong local presence. Plans are underway to migrate the platform to City Hive, enhancing inventory integration and delivery logistics.
“I want to become a leading regional shipper,” Warren says. “MadWine expands our digital reach.”
Esquin’s spacious facility is now used as a fulfillment hub for Downtown Spirits, enabling local distribution with improved efficiency.
Warren’s tech-forward vision remains central. Next up: Amazon Dash Carts at Esquin. These smart carts scan items instantly and charge customers upon exit, without a full store rebuild. Existing integrations with Amazon make this possible at low cost.
Performance and Market Growth
Despite market volatility post-Covid, Downtown Spirits, Seattle posted 13% growth in 2022—outperforming most competitors. The Esquin acquisition added further scale and strategic advantage.
“We grew while many others declined,” Warren explains. “It’s about leaning into technology and creating value.”
With expansion, Downtown Spirits now serves tens of thousands of additional customers. The membership program will evolve with more wine-focused offerings at Esquin, including exclusive access to events, delivery benefits, and premium bourbon drawings.
Commitment to Seattle and Beyond
The journey of Downtown Spirits, Seattle represents more than business success. It reflects how local retailers can thrive by merging tradition with innovation. Warren’s dual leadership of Downtown Spirits and Esquin is positioning both brands for long-term growth.
“Local developers are reaching out. People respect legacy brands,” Warren says. “Esquin is part of the fabric of this city, and now we’re helping it evolve.”
Downtown Spirits, Seattle has become a model for what the future of alcohol retail can look like—tech-driven, customer-first, and deeply rooted in community.
