Two rum specialists have collaborated to create a bar within the Petit Azca restaurant in the Tetuán neighbourhood of Madrid, Spain.
Carlos Carballo is a spirits education specialist at the Madrid Chamber of Commerce School and an experienced bartender in the city. He has teamed up with Federico J Hernández, founder of The Rum Lab, to open the bar.
The bar is named after Ti’ Punch, allegedly the ‘most popular’ cocktail in Martinique and Guadeloupe. The name is a shortening of the French term ‘petit punch’.
The drink has a debated history in the French Caribbean islands, with some arguing it was created to celebrate the abolition of slavery in France on 27 April 1848. The serve is also mentioned in Lafcadio Hearn’s 1890 book, Two Years in the West Indies, where he describes a trip to Martinique.
At the Madrid bar, the creators hope to create a home for ‘high-quality cocktails at affordable prices’. The main feature cocktail is the Ti’ Punch Traditionnel #1, made with Rhum Clement Bleue.
Other cocktails on the menu include four variations of a Ti’ Punch and four Daiquiris. A Jamaican Dark & Stormy is made Worthy Park Estate 109, a Rum Old Fashion with Ron Barceló Rare Blend Porto Cask Finish, and a Haitian Sour made with Kleren 22 Haitian Rum.
There will also be non-rum cocktails on offer with whisky, gin, Tequila, mezcal and vermouth.
As well as cocktails, the bar will offer a Rum Tasting Experience, diving into expressions made in Spain, Asia Pacific and the ‘English influence style’.
The back bar will feature sipping rums from across the world, including from Martinique, Guadeloupe, Barbados, Brazil, Cambodia and more.
