Spirit Master: Camus Extra

Looking for a rich, flavourful drink to sip during crisp weather? Look no further than this acclaimed Cognac from a family-owned producer.

Every year, The Spirits Business hosts its annual Luxury Masters competition. Due to the pandemic, this year’s competition was held virtually for the first time with judges tasting the bottlings blind from their homes in September.

To determine the standard of liquid in the super‐premium and ultra‐premium sectors, SB gathered a group of expert judges over Skype for the competition. The blind tasting assessed super-premium-plus products across categories such as Scotch, vodka, Cognac, rum and Tequila.

A flight of ultra-premium Cognac XO expressions saw three Gold medals awarded, including one to Camus Extra.

Cognac house Camus was founded in 1863 and is said to be the largest independent Cognac house in the world. The Camus family has been operating the Cognac house for five generations.

The Extra expression is a blend of very rare eaux-de-vie chosen for their ageing potential and aromatic complexity.

Camus’ distillation process saw wines from the Borderies, Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne distilled with their lees in small copper pot stills. The eaux-de-vie is aged in cool, damp cellars in small fine-grained, lightly toasted oak casks.

The resulting liquid has notes of dried violet, pastry, tobacco, leather and nuts, followed by an “intense, velvety and very long finish”.

Camus Extra was created by Michel Camus in the 1970s. In 2000, his grandson and Camus’ current president, Cyril Camus, created a decanter inspired by the perfume world.

The Cognac was then repackaged in 2018 in a new gift box with features such as a gold clover clasp and sliding doors.
