ProWine China visitor numbers grow

Wine and spirits fair ProWine China reported a 9.2% boost in visitor numbers to its Shanghai show last week.

ProWine China took place from 10 to 12 November at the Shanghai New International Expo Center (SNIEC). It was the only global wine and spirits trade fair to be held in person since the outbreak of Covid-19, the show’s organisers said. The show was jointly organised by Messe Düsseldorf and Informa Markets.

The three-day fair welcomed a total of 22,542 trade visitors, and 400 producers and distributors from 17 countries.

Ian Roberts, managing director of hospitality, food and beverage, Informa Markets, said: “We are delighted with this year’s ProWine China, which has attracted 22,542 visitors. The various multi-city promotion and publicity campaigns which we have undertook all year to promote ProWine China 2021 have laid a very strong foundation for this year’s edition, despite the Covid-19 epidemic.”

Events included a masterclass from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET), plus a selection of tasting courses at the country pavilions.

The show was made possible by the ‘effective’ pandemic control in China and stringent health and safety measures.

Michael Degen, executive director, Messe Düsseldorf, said: “Organising ProWine China 2020 on schedule amidst the epidemic was more challenging this year than ever. We are delighted that the event maintains its international feature and hope its success will lead to new opportunities for the promotion of both domestic and international economic cycles in the post-epidemic era in the wines and spirits sector.”

The next ProWine China show in 2021 will be renamed ProWine in Shanghai. It will return to the same venue on 9 to 11 November next year.
