Swedish Mackmyra Distillery has been acquired by former board member Lennart Hero and investment firm No.1 Capital AB after the distillery filed for bankruptcy on 19 August.
The acquisition of Mackmyra Svensk Whisky AB by Hero and No.1 Capital was finalised on 1 October 2024.
NordKapital Aktiebolag represented the buyers in the transfer of assets.
At the time of bankruptcy, Hero was the main shareholder of Mackmyra Svensk Whisky AB and the company’s largest lender. He is said to have a deep connection to Mackmyra and is eager to provide the staff with an opportunity to help the company grow.
No.1 Capital AB is an investment company with a focus on developing and strengthening companies through capital and strategic expertise.
The Swedish distillery’s press release stated: “Our main goal with this deal is to retain as many of the skilled employees at Mackmyra as possible. We recognise and appreciate the enormous knowledge and passion of the staff, and we look forward to continuing to work with them to develop and strengthen the brand Mackmyra.
“Our vision is to lift Mackmyra to the next level. By adding both capital and strategic expertise we plan to further develop and refine the brand, with a continued strong anchoring in Swedish whisky tradition. Our goal is to make Mackmyra an even more prominent player on the global stage the whisky market.”
It continued: “We understand the importance of maintaining the relationship with the barrel owners, which is a central part of Mackmyra’s community. A priority for us is to ensure that all barrel owners, both private and company-owned, get the opportunity to bottle their whisky according to agreement.
“We look forward to maintaining and further develop the unique commitment that Mackmyra has towards its barrel owners and whisky enthusiasts. With this new venture, we hope to revive and strengthen Mackmyra’s proud heritage, and we see looking forward to an exciting future for both the staff, the barrel owners and the brand.”
Mackmyra Swedish Whiskey AB was founded in 1999 and has since been a pioneer in Swedish whisky production.
