White Peak debuts new small batch whisky

English producer White Peak, Derbyshire’s first single malt whisky distillery, has unveiled the second bottling in its Small Batch series.

Husband-and-wife team Max and Claire Vaughan founded White Peak Distillery in 2016, said to be Derbyshire’s first full-scale craft distillery.

White Peak will launch the second edition of its Wire Works Small Batch whisky on 20 October with a higher ABV of 47.7%.

It will follow the launch of Wire Works Small Batch in June 2022, which was bottled at 46.2% ABV.

The new variant was matured in a combination of ex-Bourbon and the distillery’s signature STR (shaved, toasted and recharred) casks.

The resulting liquid is lightly peated with the ‘fruit-forward’ characteristics found in the Wire Works range.

The expression is said to have notes of fruits, vanilla butter fudge and fruitcake on the nose, with hints of tobacco, bitter orange marmalade and cereal on the palate.

The new whisky is limited to 4,251 bottles in the UK, Germany and Italy.

“Driving Wire Works Whisky into the international market for the first time is really exciting and hopefully the start of another part of our business,” said Max Vaughan.

“We are delighted to be working with new partners in Germany and Italy to help us build the brand in Europe and share our passion and whiskies with those outside of the UK.”

The bottling is priced at RRP £60 (US$67) per 700ml and will be available from the White Peak website and distillery shop. It can also be purchased from Master of Malt, Selfridges and The Whisky Exchange.

It will also be sold in Pinkernells in Germany, and through Rossi & Rossi in Italy.

The distillery’s inaugural single malt, Wire Works, was released in February 2022 with more than 5,000 bottles. It sold out in a few hours.

Last month, White Peak Distillery sold the first numbered bottle of Wire Works for £9,900 (US$11,377), setting a new record for English whisky at auction.
