Teeling Whiskey has released Blackpitts, a peated single malt Irish whiskey.
The production of Blackpitts uses smoke created by burning peat while malting the barley. This was a practice common in Ireland before the wide availability of coal for the Irish whiskey industry.
This new expression was inspired by the historic Blackpitts area behind the new Teeling Whiskey Distillery in Newmarket in the old Liberties area of Dublin City. Blackpitts was synonymous with many industries, including malting houses.
Using smoke to dry barley during the malting process produces a distinctive smoky taste profile — the signature of a peated single malt. Teeling Blackpitts also goes through a triple-distillation process, allowing “the notes of barbeque smoke notes to shine,” the company reports. The spirit then ages in both ex-bourbon and ex-Sauternes white wine casks before being bottled at 46% ABV with no chill filtration.
“When we reestablished Teeling Whiskey in 2012 our goal was to be the leader in driving the choice and expressions of Irish whiskey as well as to revive distilling in the city of Dublin,” says Jack Teeling, founder and managing director. “With our new Blackpitts Peated Single Malt we manage to achieve both.”

Teeling Whiskey Blackpitts Peated Single Malt will hit U.S. shelves this January for a suggested retail price of $74.99 per 750-ml. bottle.
