Independent grain supplier Simpsons Malt has agreed to acquire a 40-acre site in Speyside to meet demand from Scottish producers.
Simpsons Malt produces malted barley, which is used in the production of Scotch whisky and other spirits. The family-owned company currently operates two malting facilities in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, and Tivetshall St Margaret, Norfolk.
The company’s proposed third site in Scotland would offer “state-of-the-art” maltings as well as malted barley storage facilities.
Simpsons Malt managing director Tim McCreath said: “I am delighted to announce that we have entered into this agreement, which aligns with the company’s long-term strategic objectives.
“Having a maltings and malting barley storage facility in Speyside is something we have given serious thought to for a number of years and, subject to planning and due diligence, we will begin construction when the time is right and demand is there from our customers.”
Construction of the site near the town of Rothes, 10 miles south of Elgin, is subject to planning and due diligence.
