English producer Penrhos Spirits will begin packaging its portfolio of spirits in 100% recycled aluminium bottles from January 2023.
The new aluminium bottles have been designed and crafted with a specialist producer to be bespoke, spirit safe, and fully recyclable, reusable and refillable.
Charles Turner, Penrhos Spirits co-founder, said: “At Penrhos Spirits, we are always looking for ways to improve our sustainability in both the orchards and distillery.
“This launch marks an exciting moment in the Penrhos journey, and if we can do it as a relatively small, growing brand, then we want to raise a challenge to the wider drinks community too, to get on board.”
The brand’s products are made from ‘imperfectly perfect’ fruit from Penrhos Farm, located in Herefordshire, England, that would otherwise go to waste.
As part of an ongoing commitment to sustainability and improving the carbon footprint at Penrhos, the team decided to create aluminium bottles to provide consumers with a more sustainable option to glass bottles.
It is estimated that 75% of aluminium that has ever been produced is still in the material loop today.
Glass ‘least sustainable option’
Furthermore, a recent study by researchers at the University of Southampton concluded glass is the least sustainable bottling option, with recycled aluminium the most sustainable choice on the market today.
Penrhos’ range of spirits, which includes gin, rum and a 0% ABV botanical ‘spirit’, will permanently transition to aluminium bottles throughout 2023.
To celebrate the move, the brand has also introduced a limited edition Wonky Raspberry expression, created using the excess ‘wobbly’ raspberries collected from the farm over summer 2022.
The introduction of aluminium bottles also follows the launch of the brand’s 2.5-litre refillable pouches, launched this year. The pouches require less energy than glass bottles to make and transport, and are fully recyclable for on-trade customers.
Penrhos Spirits 700ml aluminium bottles will be available from penrhosspirits.co.uk from January, for an RRP of £34 (US$41.72). All spirits are bottled at 40.5% ABV.
In October we reported on the growing demand of aluminium screw caps.
