Actor Mark Wahlberg is the latest celebrity to join the Tequila category after buying a stake in Flecha Azul.
Flecha Azul was co-founded in 2017. It was brought to market in 2020 by Mexican PGA golfer Abraham Ancer and Mexican entrepreneur Aron Marquez.
Ancer and Marquez approached Wahlberg to join the team.
The move marks Wahlberg’s first venture into the Tequila category.
Wahlberg, known for roles in films such as The Departed and Ted, commented: “I am always looking for great business opportunities to invest my time and energy.
“When I was approached by Abraham and Aron, we immediately connected, and I knew that I wanted to partner with them to help build Flecha Azul into a global brand.”
The brand name, Flecha Azul, derives from the Spanish words for ‘blue’ and ‘arrow’.
The Tequila is made in Jalisco, Mexico, from 100% estate-grown Blue Weber agave. It is created by a multi-generational, family-owned-and-operated distillery whose legacy can be traced back to 1840.
The brand comprises five expressions: blanco, reposado, añejo, cristalino and extra añejo.
Flecha Azul Blanco is aged for two months, while the reposado bottling is matured for six months.
Meanwhile, Flecha Azul Añejo is rested in barrels for 18 months, and the cristalino Tequila is triple filtered to give its clear appearance.
Flecha Azul Extra Añejo is aged for 36 months.
A raft of famous faces have entered the Tequila category in recent years. George Clooney’s Casamigos Tequila brand was bought by Diageo in 2017 in a deal worth up to US$1 billion. In 2020, Casamigos became a million-case-selling brand.
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson also established his own Tequila brand, Teremana. The brand sold more than 600,000 nine-litre cases in 2021, making it the “fastest-growing Tequila in the history of all spirits”, according to the Jumanji actor.
Furthermore, reality TV star and model Kendall Jenner created 818 Tequila. In October last year, 818 Tequila partnered with non-profit Sacred Agave, which works to support rural Mexican communities that produce agave spirits.
