Carrie Smith of Edinburgh’s Hoot the Redeemer has been named the winner of the fifth edition of Jägermeister’s Meister Hunter competition.
The final was held in London on 15-16 November, and saw six bartenders from around the world compete to take home the top prize of £3,000 (US$3,605). The winner also gained entry into the Hubertus Circle, an exclusive group of global bartenders that was started by Jägermeister in 2011.
Each finalist secured their place after winning their respective regional heat, which were held in Scotland, Ireland, Canada, Brighton, Liverpool and London in September this year.
The final was judged by a panel of drinks industry professionals, including Simon Webster from Bar Life UK, Nina Eggeling of the global Jägermeister team in Germany, Jägermeister UK brand ambassador Florian Beuren, and The Gibson’s master mixologist, Marian Beke.
The first challenge of the final required the competitors to work with chefs to create dishes that would then pair with a unique cocktail of their making.
The second day began with a fragrance masterclass, hosted by scent artist and perfume teacher Ericka Duffy, and a mixology and garnish masterclass, hosted by Beke.
These masterclasses formed the basis of the final challenge held at Oriole Bar, London, that evening. The finalists were tasked with making bespoke cocktails that took inspiration from what they had learned.
Beuren said: “This year’s competition has been so inspiring. We wanted to give each finalist an experience they will never forget and they threw themselves into the challenges with passion and enthusiasm.
“The final event was incredible and all the finalists made exceptional cocktails and memories to last a lifetime.”
Smith, who won with her cocktail called The Cardomummy, said: “The whole experience has been unbelievable. I’ve had a brilliant experience and have learned so much, which I’m excited to take back to Scotland and share with my colleagues and customers.”
Canada’s Pierre-Oliver Trempe and London’s Tristan Carvalho were awarded second and third place, respectively.
