Glasgow Distillery creates second peated whisky

The Glasgow Distillery Company has released its second peated single malt whisky, which has been finished in Pedro Ximénez casks.

The new Glasgow 1770 Peated Rich & Smoky whisky succeeds the producer’s inaugural peated single malt. There are only a handful of bottles left of the 1770 Peated Release No.1 whisky, which was launched in August 2019.

While the first peated expression was matured in first-fill ex-Sherry casks and finished in virgin oak, the new iteration has been matured in virgin oak and finished in Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks.

Liam Hughes, CEO and co-founder of The Glasgow Distillery, said: “After receiving such a fantastic response to our first smoky single malt, we have been working tirelessly to bring you something slightly different, but equally as impressive.

“Our new expression has been laid to rest in virgin oak casks and finished in delicious Pedro Ximénez Sherry hogsheads of the finest quality, giving the spirit not just a deeply delicious taste, but also an incredibly rich colour.”

The expression is made from malted barley, which has been smoked with “aromatic heather-rich” peat from the Scottish Highlands, and water from Loch Katrine.

The resulting liquid offers a nose of sweet smoke and rich toffee with notes of vanilla, dried dark fruits and cracked black peppercorn spice. The palate is dominated by tobacco leaf and dark toffee, followed by a finish of salted caramel, liquorice, and lingering spice.

Bottled at 46% ABV, Glasgow 1770 Peated Rich & Smoky is priced at RRP £49 (US$63) and is available to buy online from the distillery’s website.

In July 2020, The Glasgow Distillery Company secured a £5.5 million (US$7m) loan to help it expand internationally.

The producer has released a number of new expressions this year including its first blended malt whisky and a triple-distilled single malt matured in virgin oak casks.
