Ecospirits hires Europe sales director

Sustainable packaging creator Ecospirits has appointed a new sales director for Europe, and expanded its UK portfolio.

Iain McPherson has been named as Ecospirts’ sales director, and is ‘set to direct the company’s rapid expansion’ across Europe.

He will also be responsible for developing existing European markets and identifying new market opportunities, according to the brand.

McPherson said: “It’s a brilliant solution to a huge problem. Seventy billion single use glass bottles – and that number is increasing every year – is a major environmental problem for the drinks industry.

“My hope for the role is that I can help all the people and organisations involved in the value chain, from production to consumption, to remove the requirement for single use glass bottles.”

McPherson joins Ecospirits from UK wholesaler Matthew Clark, where he was most recently regional managing director for Scotland.

He previously held roles in wine and beer sales, as well as business development with Waverly TBS and brewing company Scottish & Newcastle.

McPherson added: “Through our portfolio of closed loop technologies and sustainability programs like the Ecospirits Forest Program and Ecospirits Carbon Calculator, it would be amazing to see people in every country enjoying quality cocktails and wines while knowing they are reducing the impact on our environment.

“I look forward to meeting and learning from the brilliant people in the industry – brands, distributors, wholesalers, and operators – and hopefully facilitating relationships and processes that produce lasting commercial and environmental benefits, well into the future.”

The company secured its first European market in April 2021, when it partnered with spirits importer and distributor Mangrove UK.

Ecospirits has also announced its collaboration with a number of Mangrove UK brands for its closed loop network and Climate Partner Programme.

The latest brands involved in partnerships with Ecospirits include Black Cow Vodka, Don Q Rum, El Bandarra and The English Whisky Company.

They join existing Mangrove UK brands, such as Avallen Calvados and Portobello Road Gin.

Nick Gillett, managing director of Mangrove UK, said: “Iain is a great addition to the Ecospirits team – his experience and his advocation of the circular economy will both be crucial to the expansion into Europe.

“We’re already experiencing a seismic change in the industry and Iain is the ideal person to seize this opportunity and bring long term sustainable solutions to the market. We look forward to working closely with him as our partnership with Ecospirits goes from strength to strength.”

Ecospirits partnered with Trois Frères Distillery, producer of Takamaka Rum, in March this year, to bring a closed-loop spirits distribution system to the Seychelles.
