Brugal introduces $2,800 rum

Edrington-owned Brugal rum has released a limited edition expression in homage of its founder, priced at US$2,800.

Named after founder Andrés Brugal, the new 41.5% ABV expression is made by blending two double-aged reserve rums with a selection of first-fill single Bourbon and oloroso Sherry casks.

Andrés Brugal founded his namesake rum brand in 1888 in the Dominican Republic. The new rum pays homage to the founder’s ‘pioneering spirit of exploration and generations of maestros’.

The resulting liquid offers notes of roasted coffee beans, dulce de leche fudge and Dominican rum cake on the nose. The palate brings flavours of oak, vanilla bean and sweet caramel flan, alongside ripe berries, black peppercorns and sweet cloves.

Jassil Villanueva Quintana, master distiller, said: “Quintessentially Dominican flavours combine to create an extraordinary liquid of astounding character that pushes the boundaries of discovery.

“With a touch of sweetness on the nose, and a well-rounded, long-lasting mouthfeel, this full-bodied rum is a true celebration of the distinctive flavours of Puerto Plata.”

“This limited edition bottling is a journey that started over a century ago. Andrés Brugal combines special single cask family reserves and our signature double-ageing technique to tell a dual story of my family’s legacy of rum making, as well as my own as maestra ronera.”

This expression comes in a hand-blown crystal decanter and display cabinet inspired by the travelling cases earlier maestros used in their voyages.

Only 460 bottles of Andrés Brugal rum will be available globally, including 30 bottles in the UK and 50 in the US.

In July, The Macallan owner Edrington saw full-year revenue rise by 45%.
