As consumer demand for responsibly made products increases, premium rum brand Flor de Caña positioned itself at the forefront of sustainable distilling when it became the first carbon neutral and Fair Trade spirit.
The story of Flor de Caña rum dates back to 1890, when a young adventurer from Genoa, Italy, established an agro‐industrial mill and later a distillery in the fertile lands of Nicaragua.
Over the ensuing 130 years, covering five family generations, Flor de Caña rum has made a name for itself due to the quality of its liquid. However, its historic commitment to sustainability is what is now attracting the attention of eco‐conscious rum enthusiasts around the globe.
Today, Flor de Caña is the only spirit to hold the two top sustainability credentials in the world: carbon‐neutral certification and Fair Trade status.
The carbon‐neutral certification informs consumers that the brand offsets all carbon emissions during the entire lifecycle of its rum. The accreditation was issued by The Carbon Trust, a not‐for‐profit company that measures and certifies carbon footprints to the PAS 2060 standard for carbon neutrality.
Meanwhile, the Fair Trade certification verifies that the rum is sustainably produced, from field to bottle, in compliance with more than 300 rigorous labour, social and environmental standards. The certification with Fair Trade USA, the leading certifier of Fair Trade products in North America, covers areas such as safe working conditions, protection of fundamental human rights and environmental best practices.
The Nicaraguan rum brand was certified carbon neutral earlier this year and gained its Fair Trade status in 2018. Flor de Caña was the first spirit producer to hold both accreditations.
Other sustainable practices carried out by Flor de Caña date back more than a century. In 1913, the Nicaraguan rum brand began offering free healthcare and education to its employees and their families at a hospital and school operated by Flor de Caña.
In terms of taking care of the environment, Flor de Caña has been distilling its rum with 100% renewable energy for more than a decade. The brand has also planted 50,000 trees annually since 2005 and captures and recycles all CO2 emissions during the fermentation process.
Flor de Caña’s portfolio includes premium rums that are aged in Bourbon barrels for up to 30 years, without the addition of sugar, artificial ingredients or other additives. It is this care that goes into making each rum, following a century‐old artisanal tradition, that results in Flor de Caña’s exceptionally smooth flavour.
The rum portfolio is also gluten‐free, Kosher‐certified and with a low‐calorie content.
Flor de Caña’s historic commitment to sustainable practices and its century‐old rum‐making tradition, perfected throughout 130 years and five family generations, have earned the brand more than 200 international accolades, making it one of the most awarded rums in the world.
Recently, Flor de Caña expanded its range with the launch of V Generaciones, a 30‐year‐old single‐barrel ultra‐luxury rum.
Released in commemoration of Flor de Caña’s 130th anniversary in 2020, the rum is a special tribute to the passion, dedication and commitment to excellence of the thousands of workers and the five family generations who have been part of the brand’s journey since 1890.
Flor de Caña V Generaciones is more than just an exceptionally rare liquid in a beautifully packaged bottle. The packaging features the signatures of the five family generations behind Flor de Caña, a bottle cap made from volcanic rock and a replica of the 1902 volcano postal stamp of Nicaragua.
The individually numbered bottles feature a metallic label and certificate of authenticity. Each bottle is presented in a black leather case, boasting an avant‐garde yet minimalist style. The rum is available to buy in premium spirit retailers.
