US distiller Copperworks has unveiled two gins matured in casks that previously held peated Scotch whiskies from Laphroaig and Caol Ila.
Copperworks Distilling Company filled casks from Islay distilleries Laphroaig and Caol Ila with its Small Batch Gin. The Laphroaig cask was left to rest for seven months and the Caol Ila cask was matured for 10 months.
“We’re intrigued by how different these two releases are,” said Jason Parker, Copperworks co-founder and president.
“The Caol Ila cask version is lighter with citrus notes and the Laphroaig cask version is heavier and smokier. It’s fascinating to taste them side by side. Both gins are enjoyable on their own, as sipping gins, and they both offer flavours robust enough to feature in spirit-forward cocktails.”
Released as part of the distiller’s Experimental Series of cask-finished gins, the two single cask gins are bottled at 50% ABV and available to purchase from the Copperworks online store and at the distillery. Each expression is priced at US$49.95 per 750ml bottle.
Copperworks Peated Cask Finished Gin (Caol Ila Cask) has aromas of fresh lime, campfire, cumin, sandalwood and grilled pineapple, as well as flavours of earthy heather, blackberry honey and citrus pith. The Laphroaig-aged release has aromas of driftwood smoke, musk, pine tar and cedar, which lead to flavours of matcha green tea, tobacco and cardamom.
