After a bit of a delay following the official launch overseas last May, Bruichladdich Port Charlotte OLC:01 has reached the shelves of American retailers.
Port Charlotte OLC:01 was distilled in 2010. Originally filled into an array of ex-bourbon, ex-Syrah and ex-VDN (vin doux naturel) casks, this spirit was recasked into a parcel of Fernando de Castilla’s Oloroso hogsheads in 2018.
“These Oloroso hogsheads are superb casks,” says Adam Hannett, head distiller at Bruichladdich Distillery. “They’re smaller than your average butts, so they’ve quickly left a lasting impression on this complex single malt.”
The resultant character is dry, earthy peat with roasted coffee, lime and figs, the company says. Chocolate and vanilla come through as the peat embers give a last hint of smoke.
Bruichladdich Port Charlotte OLC:01 was bottled at the distillery on Islay at 55.1% ABV, and replaces the Port Charlotte MRC:01 2010 within the current range. Keeping the brand’s tradition, this is a heavily peated single malt Scotch.
