Alan Lodge writing award extends entry deadline

The deadline to enter The Alan Lodge Young International Drinks Writer of the Year Award 2020 has been extended until 15 January.

Launched in 2012 in memory of The Spirits Business’ late deputy editor, Alan Lodge, the award is open to journalists, columnists and bloggers under the age of 35 who cover the wine, beer, spirits and cocktail sectors.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, judging of the 2020 iteration of the award was regrettably postponed. Judging for this year’s edition of The Alan Lodge Young International Drinks Writer of the Year Award will now take place in January 2021.

Entrants have until Friday 15 January to submit up to three pieces of writing, published online or in print between February 2019 and March 2020. Writers are encouraged to also submit a few sentences outlining their professional background and writing interests.

Submissions will be judged by a panel of experienced industry professionals, and the results will be published in the February 2021 issue of The Spirits Business magazine.

Previous recipients of the award include Hamish Smith, Laura Foster, Amy Hopkins, Tyler Wetherall and Margarett Waterbury. Last year, Shay Waterworth was named the Alan Lodge Young International Drinks Writer of the Year 2019. New York-based writer Dan Q Dao was named Alan Lodge Young International Drinks Writer of the Year 2018.

Melita Kiely, editor of The Spirits Business, said: “Each year it’s an honour for The Spirits Business to run The Alan Lodge Young International Drinks Writer of the Year Award in memory of a hugely missed member of the Union Press team.

“Despite the challenges of this year for everyone in the trade, we want to continue celebrating great writing talent in the industry and Alan’s memory through this prestigious award.

“Being your own champion is never easy – but I’d strongly encourage any writers sitting on published work they feel proud of to put themselves forward for the award.”

Submissions should be sent as a URL, PDF or Word document to [email protected] or [email protected].
